James Linders, D.D
This is a subject on which the church has been divided for centuries. Just imagine if scholars differ on THIS issue, how confused must the laymen be? There’s a belief going around among Christians that GOD died up on the cross to reconcile us unto Him; If this is INDEED the case, WHY did Y’shua shout out on the cross: “My God WHY hast Thou forsaken me. “(Matthew 27:46) It is VERY clear that God deserted Y’shua on the cross at a point shortly before He gave up His spirit.
Let’s investigate who Y’shua REALLY was: “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin…and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her… And when she saw him, she was troubled...And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. …behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.” (Luke 1:26-31). There was a REASON why she had to give His name”Y’shua” THIS reason is recorded in Matthew 1:21: “....he will save his people from their sins.”
All babies get their blood from their father. This means that all babies get their blood from Adam; blood tainted by sin. (Genesis 3) This is why He was born of a virgin. Creator God supernaturally implanted a specially created seed in a virgin girl’s womb. That’s way Y’shua’s Blood would come from that specially created seed and NOT from Adam. He came to Earth to be our “perfect” substitute, dying in our place, paying the death penalty for our sin. (Romans 6:23). He was BOTH perfect Man (The human part of Mary) and perfect God (The spirit of God). There was NOBODY on earth who was WITHOUT sin; not even babies. The Word of GOD declares that we have ALL sin – WITHOUT exception, and fall SHORT of the GLORY of God. (Romans 23:3)
The ONLY reason WHY he would have uttered these words on the cross: “My God my God WHY hast thou forsaken me,” was because God’s Spirit left Him; NOT figuratively but literally. The Word of God says we must ADD nothing to His Word or OMIT anything from it. (Deuteronomy 4:2, Revelation 22:19). We must remember that God is Spirit… a spirit CAN’T die. So it would have been the Man Y’shua who died on the cross. Otherwise WHO would have raised Him from death if God died WITH Him? It would have been a DARK and TRAGIC day in the history of creation if Y’shua AND God were BOTH dead! But praise GOD He didn’t die WITH Y’shua…He HAD to be there to raise Him from the dead so that we could be reconciled with God.
